Contraindications to Massage
Contraindications are physical or behavioural reasons that would prevent a massage from taking place safely (in full or in part). These can be broken down into 3 catagories:
Medical Contraindications
The client must have written permission from their GP or consultant, or sign a disclaimer form indemnifying the therapist from any adverse reactions, prior to the treatment.
Some examples of medical contraindications are:
Pregnancy (1st trimester)Cardio-vascular conditionsany condition already being treated by a GPor another Complementary therapy practitioner
Medical oedemaOsteoporosisarthritisnervous/ psychotic conditionsLocalised restriction
A specific area of the clients body cannot recieve any form of treatment.
Some examples of localised restrictive contraindications are:
Cuts, bruises, open skinVaricose veinsSkin rashes, bites, stingsWounds, burnsLocalised swelling, rednessTotal Contraindications
The client is completely restricted from receiving any form of treatment.
Some examples of total restrictive contraindications are:
Fever Contagious or infectous diseasesUnder the influence of alcohol or drugsSevere widespread psoriasis, eczema or dermatitisHypersensitive skin*Some contraindications such as minor surgery or sunburn can be localised or total restrictive contraindications depending on the size and severity of the problem.
IF A THERAPIST CANNOT FULLY EXPLAIN TO YOU ALL THE CONTRAINDICATIONS RELATED TO A SPECIFIC HEALTH ISSUE THEN DO NOT HAVE THE TREATMENT. IF IN ANY DOUBT, ALWAYS SPEAK TO YOUR GP OR CONSULTANT FIRST.
